237/365 – KING STREET, GLASGOW

A couple of weeks ago I visited the site of my gg-grandfather’s address at the time of his wedding in 1857.

This is the home address as given by my gg-grandmother, Elizabeth Richardson, number 39 King Street. The flat, which is situated today above the gaming shop, is only a short walk away from where her future husband lived on the other side of Trongate.

Its impressive to see that Glasgow has retained a great many of these tenements, preferring in many cases to retain the front of the buildings while refurbishing (or in some cases), completely rebuilding the rear.

In adopting such a policy, the occupation standards of the buildings show immediate improvement while the original heritage, look and feel of the city is maintained. I can’t help but think that my home city of Liverpool might not have benefited if they had chosen to adopt similar policies over recent years….
